Feeling hot, hot, hot? Don’t let rising temperatures melt your makeup, says Lily Lolo Makeup Artist Jane Bradley.
When an average summer’s day can see you moving from hot car to air- conditioned office, lunch in the park to dinner with friends, sweat-proof makeup that can stand up to sweat and humidity is an absolute must.
“Summer makeup is all about looking fresh and not-too ‘done’”, says Makeup Artist Jane Bradley, who creates all the looks for Lily Lolo campaigns and shoots. “But whether it’s under the studio lights or out in the sunshine, sweat can quickly undo all your hard work, so it’s important to prep skin right and make a few tweaks to what you apply and how before heading out, so that your makeup lasts.”
Jane advises using a lighter moisturiser and non-greasy SPF, and allowing both to fully sink in before applying foundation, so that you don’t start with an already slippery layer.
“Next sweep a light application of powder over your skin before applying foundation or tinted moisturiser”, says Jane, explaining that it gives extra longevity to your base especially if you pop some powder on top afterwards too.
Lily Lolo founder Vikki Khan has her own, refreshing summer makeup tip. “Spritzing your face after applying makeup might seem counter-intuitive, but it’s actually a great way to set makeup and help it last longer, especially in the heat”, advises Vikki. “Use our Makeup Mist on top of your powder – my summer go-to is our super- fine Finishing Powder in Flawless Silk – and you’ll be amazed at how much longer your base stays put! Plus, I just love the fresh, invigorating scent, and it includes aloe vera, which feels really cooling.”
Jane Bradley’s final summer makeup tip is all about the eyes. “Soft pencils are easy to apply and work with, but even the best can slip when you sweat,” says Jane. “If I’m heading out on a warm day, I’ll always set them with a complementary shade of powder. For brows, Lily Lolo’s Eyebrow Duo does the job perfectly, and for eyeliner I use any matching eye shadow with a flat angled brush to set it in place and ensure a smooth precise line. This really helps reduce smudging and transferring onto the lids, and means that I don’t have to touch up throughout the day.”
